Collection: Tui Cathrin Roman Senior

My name is Tui Cathrin Roman Senior.

Born, May 21, 1961.

Jack Roman is my father, and Korama Kena-Ruatara is my mother.

I am a direct descendant of Chief Ruatara of Rangihoua.

Specializing in the art of Kete Whākairō.

I am a Harakeke weaver, Kai Raranga

My work will be displayed for the month of September at the

ANZ Centre 23 Albert Street, Auckland Central.

I am available for putiputi workshops. Contact me by leaving a message on the contact page.

These are my very first Kete I created with my aunty Meriana back in 1995. It took three attempts of undoing and redoing before I could proceed, as perfection was essential to my aunty, who never settles for anything less.

This first kete

These Kete hold great significance due to the loss of my 17 year old son, Hemi Pomare Bilich, who was a passenger in a drink driving car accident in 1996.

Weaving became my solace for grieving, and I genuinely feel his presence guiding me towards inner strength, enabling me to be there fully and wholeheartedly for my whānau.

I ventured out and have been experimenting with my creativity and have produced some contemporary pieces.  I also enjoy making bouquets and table settings for weddings. I have had some mahi published in a book called 'Pacific Patterns'.  I have also had my mahi exhibited in numerous museums, galleries, art shows and countries all around the world.

As a solo mother, I have experienced many challenges, but when it comes to my children the well known saying "It takes a village to raise a child" resonates deeply within me.

I am so grateful to my close-knit community also known as THE VILLY for being the support I needed.

My whole family have been a huge part in my success, from the preparation, to dying and weaving of harakeke.

I weave with my moko's around me, because each kete I make tells a unique story. That is the essence of kete whākairō.
